" HHH, OMG, POLITICS"
Comments like these are happening at a far frequent basis here on this place called the "internet". Everyone likes to claim that they know what's right for the business. Even i'm guilty of it. I think it has to stop. And i'm going to tell you why.
Everybody on the internet obsesses over guys like Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho. Let's break this down a bit.
When you look at a guy like Kurt Angle, by rights, this guy should be a main event player for years to come. Why? Not because of his wrestling ability, but because the guy is entertaining. Do you think that fans come out to watch wrestling ability anymore? Hell no they don't. Wrestling fans only care about storylines, guys that do high-flying moves, and people that are entertaining on the mic.
Which brings me to Chris Benoit. Here we go. Call your mom's, call your dad's, call your neighbours. OMG SOMEBODY IS ABOUT TO DISS CHRIS BENOIT. Benoit is awesome in the ring. There is absolutely no question about it. I must say, people do not come out to a WWE show to see Chris Benoit. The guy simply cannot talk. If Chris Benoit was able to talk, and hold an audience, and be able to ENTERTAIN them, Benoit would have already been the WWE champion. in 2000, Benoit was getting respectable pops while in WCW. When he won the title in 2000, it didn't exactly set the world on fire. It didn't help them get out of the ratings shitter they were in. Now you're gonna say....BUT THE POLITICS RUINED WCW, KEVIN NASH, HULK HOGAN, they ruined WCW. Maybe they did, but look at the WWE in 1995. That's the worst wrestling has ever been for "POLITICS". You had the kliq running around, "holding people back" and 'screwing people over backstage". WWE/F was able to recover in a few years time starting in 1997 with the awesome Hart Foundation and Steve Austin angle. While the wrestling was pretty good, the people were intrigued by the STORYLINE going on, the CHARACTERS of Bret Hart, and of Steve Austin. I know I was at the time. In 1998 WWE was able to forget about the "politics" of 1995 and have arguably their hottest year ever. in 1998, there was no bigtime "workrate matches", it was the storylines going on at the time. It was Vince vs Steve, and later, The Rock.
Another issue that seems to go against the IWC is of size. Vince Mcmahon simply does not like small wrestlers at the top of his card. Vince Mcmahon will forever have big men in the top positions. Vince has these big men in the top positions because these guys are seen as monsters, and when his really popular babyfaces beat them, it makes them seem more credible.
When Bill Goldberg debuted in the WWE earlier this year, everyone was going nuts over it. #Wrestling was getting far more traffic, with the majority all talking about Goldberg, or asking questions. It would go further as people wanted to see matches like Austin vs Goldberg, Goldberg vs Brock, Goldberg vs Steiner. What about Benoit? Nobody was talking about what he was doing at the time.
Face it guys, Benoit may win the World title someday, maybe even in the next month or 2, but he isn't going to be the champion for long. When he was fighting for the title with Jericho against Austin back in 2001, ratings and the KOTR buyrate tanked.
Perhaps the biggest trend happening comes with respect to the ratings. When Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle fought in the Iron Man Match on Smackdown, the emphasis of the show was placed on WRESTLING. The ratings came in the next few days and they were not good. Fast forward to Smackdown several weeks back. Total wrestling time= TWELVE MINUTES. Guess what? The ratings went up. That show got the highest rating all year. Does that tell you anything? So yes, get your panties in a bunch all you want, jizz in them, cry, bitch at me because i'm sure you will, but that's just the way it is. As fun as the internet can be sometimes, and as much as I enjoy talking wrestling with people in chat rooms and message boards, it just seems to be very cultish. Everybody cheers for the same guys, everybody hates the same guys. I was starting to be that way until recently. Before I got a computer in August of 2000, I was enjoying wrestling. ven in 1995, when wrestling was "bad", I was loving it. In 1999-2000 when WCW was going down the toilet, I was still watching every Tuesday (in Canada) and Thunder on Thursdays. Once I started finding the news sites, and the message boards, and the chat rooms, my love for wrestling went down the toilet. It's too bad, cause my Monday Nights aren't as exciting now. I hope it changes, and changes soon.
