6/9/05 Smackdown Roast Jun 10 - 01:04 am EDT

Opinion by Alex Carson

My first Roast article since 2002, let's make it a good one.

Just a quick note about Monday's RAW:

Is this 1998? Say what you want about WWE's decision to move John Cena to RAW with the #1 pick in the 2005 draft lottery. You can argue that the move further cripples Smackdown's roster. Or you can argue that the aforementioned roster is already dead, and WWE should end the split. Like, now. What you can't argue though, is that the June 6, 2005 edition of Monday Night RAW had an old flavor.

On to Smackdown. Chris Benoit is selected as the #1 pick for Smackdown in the 2005 Draft Lottery. Great pick to give Smackdown a main event face to reduce the sting of losing John Cena. So, until the end of the month, Smackdown is without a champion. So, does RAW combine the titles, or does Smackdown get the WWE Title back?

Carlito Vs. Haas. It amazes me that they continue to push Carlito as much as they do. He's a fairly entertaining guy, but a roll up win over Haas, who is starting to move up the ranks? I guess it's better than a clean win, but Haas just flat out brings it, and should have got the win.

Is there a gimmick or angle that Kurt Angle couldn't pull off? By far the best actor on Smackdown. He was seriously starting to creep me out during that promo. Someone give the man a red cape and cast him in the new Superman movie.

How cool is Eddie trying to cut a promo in the middle of a match? Too bad comes at the expense of the toilet water swirling ever more closer to the drain with the Cruserweight division taking the spin.

Booker T Vs. Kurt Angle. I'm 99.99% sure that was Booker's best match in his WWE career, perhaps his career as a whole. Facing Angle made it look even better, I'm sure. Give Book some credit, though. He sold well. He looked fluent. I didn't notice any botched spots. I give the match a solid ***.5 (out of four of course).

Why does WWE decide to properly build up a PPV in the last week before it, and neglect it weeks prior? Kudos for the Tazz/Angle spot. Great work on Monday with the invasion of RAW. Let's just try that more often, and sooner.

Hmm. I should try this "Who wants to be my friend" bit at the local watering hole. Like WWE, I could plant some cheap hooker in the crowd, and leave with her to look cool.

JBL Vs. Chris Benoit. Hey, hey! Paul-E on color! Another good job of putting over the PPV. Why didn't Axl and Balls just come out to begin with? The Tazzmission is still badass. No Sabu, though. I'm now faced with paying money to see him. My decision to buy the PPV is now a yes after tonight's show.

All in all, this is the best SD! I've seen since my boycott ended. Those who know about it know just how long that was. Let's home WWE takes this momentum and builds some strong shows!
